Foundation Photography Workshops

Our foundation courses offer an introduction to basic photography skills, concepts and equipment. Intended for the beginning photographer, these classes focus on developing the fundamental techniques necessary in using the camera and creating photographs.

All foundation workshops enable you to learn about traditional and digital photography via a series of 8 to 12 convenient evening classes, each 2– to 3–hours long, depending on the class in which you enroll.

Classes focused on darkroom techniques offer full access to NESOP's black and white darkrooms, color printing rooms and digital imaging lab (access to the digital imaging facility is restricted to students taking or who have taken other courses in our digital imaging classrooms or lab). Facilities are available to workshop students after 5 p.m., Monday–Friday and all day Saturday and Sunday. Access to these facilities is based on your workshop status and your compliance with the policies and procedures regarding use of our facilities.

Please note:  NESOP’s evening workshops do not fall under the scope of the school’s accreditation, and so they are not accredited by ACCSC.

This introductory course is designed to provide a foundation for students seeking to develop their color photography and color printing skills. In the course, students will be in the traditional color darkrooms, learning how to make traditional color photographs using color negatives, enlargers and the RA-4 process. Making strong color prints in the traditional darkroom or the digital darkroom requires a solid understanding of color. This workshop allows students to acquire the fundamental skills of color photography; most importantly, how to identify, correct and control color in image-making. Lectures include discussion of color theory, film and paper, and fine color balance control. The C-41 and RA-4 color processes will be discussed. Weekly group critiques will address technical and aesthetic issues of each individual student's color prints. Students are encouraged to bring any color negatives they have to the first class for example and evaluation. This course is a prerequisite for the Advanced Color workshop and is a complement to our digital arts workshops.

In response to the on-going popularity of our Beginning and Advanced Digital Camera workshops, we have created this exciting, new accelerated digital camera course.

This 10-week class is specifically designed for the beginner looking to gain substantial knowledge of digital photography, establish a solid command of their digital SLR camera and challenge themselves visually to make interesting and exciting photographs. In this accelerated course, the basic digital photographic skills taught in the Beginning Digital Camera class are combined with the more advanced techniques taught in the Advanced Digital Camera workshop to create an intense, comprehensive foundation in digital photography.

Through weekly in-class lecture, demonstration and critique, students will gain a thorough understanding of how to use their digital cameras and how to elevate their image-making from snapshot to photograph. Weekly assignments will reinforce each lesson and encourage students to apply their new skills to whatever subjects they choose to photograph. This beginner course is a great immersion in photography and will prepare students for many of the more specialized courses offered in the NESOP workshop program.

Prerequisite: No previous photographic experience is required for this course. All students must have their own digital SLR camera with adjustable exposure settings.
